About Us

The Plant Science Research and Education Unit (PSREU) serves University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) faculty with the infrastructure needed to conduct diverse row and specialty crop research projects, facilitate hands-on classes, and host thousands of visitors in outreach events.


PSREU Stats

  • 1,086 total acres
  • approximately 700 acres of cultivatable land
  • just a 30-minute drive from the UF campus in Gainesville
  • 26 staff members employed on site

History of PSREU

2000: The Green Acres Agronomy Farm was relocated from Jonesville to the PSREU. Experiments with agronomic row crops began, along with infrastructure development.

2002: Vegetable and small fruit crop research was moved from the Horticultural Unit in Gainesville to the PSREU.

2005: Turfgrass and ornamental research moved from Gainesville to the G.C. Horn Memorial Turfgrass Field Lab at the PSREU.

2010: The PSREU Administration building was completed.

2012: The PSREU conference center was completed.

2014: Expanded greenhouse complex to 19 bays for all plant research disciplines. 

2015: Built three tunnel structures for organic vegetable research.

2016: Installed a variable rate linear irrigation system. 

2018 - 2022: Renovated turf research with newer irrigation and turf varieties.

2018 - 2023: Built and renovated additional structures including shade and rain exclusion shelters, citrus breeding greenhouses, and blueberry tunnel houses. 

2024: Installed a container farm for vertical vegetable research.
